POEMS

Love is…

The laughter of your daughter
Embraces from a son
It’s the praises to your parents
For all the work they've done

It’s losing all you worked for
Forgiving all you lost
Finding faith in something great
No matter what the cost.

And it’s living with the freedom
To open up your heart
Knowing that at any time
It could be torn apart

It's something very special
Found in everything you do
And if you only look within
Its meaning will find you

An Everlasting Love

An innocent joy,
One girl and one boy,
Trading secrets and fears,
Sharing smiles now and tears
As they pledge love today
On their white wedding day

Father's trying so hard
Not to let down his guard,
So he pats your hand lightly
Doesn’t hug you as tightly
Though giving you away
Hurts more than he’ll say

And mother sits weeping,
In the pew, Grandpa’s sleeping
And sisters and brothers
Friends, colleagues, and others
They’ll gather to say right on cue,
That they’re so very happy for you

And then fifty years later
When their love’s just grown greater
They’ll embrace and they’ll dance,
And relive their romance—
And after their very last breath
They’ll again be together in death

True Love's Kiss

I've been looking for my soul mate
And have searched both far and wide
Waiting for the moment
When we're standing side by side
And I'm not alone in searching
For I know this much is true
That if we're really soul mates
He'll be searching for me to
He will never leave me
And stand firmly by my side
He could see my very soul
By looking in my eyes
For dreams are what you make them
And even if it's just a wish
I'm going to keep on waiting
For my one true lover's kiss

Someone Else's Shoes

You nod sympathetically
smile when I'm praised
and laugh whenever I do
Don't pretend to know what I feel.
You don't know, you couldn't possibly
You're not me.
The secrets of my heart are my own
and you have no right to interfere
Instead of walking around in my shoes
why not try somebody else's?
How about your own

The Price We Pay

A woman was driving sober one night
On a dark, deserted road.
nothing in life ever seemed to go right;
her dream home had just been sold.
Her baby was anxious to be born,
It never did anything wrong.
That's why it seems so unfair.
That now they're both dead and gone.

One beer too many,
Is what ended his life.
Leaving behind
A grieving family and wife.
“One more beer won’t kill me.”
He had thought with a laugh,
And taking the bottle into his hands.
He alone was to blame for his death.

No one knows the consequences
Before they drink and drive.
Or if they do, they choose to ignore
All of the warning signs.
When they get behind the wheel--
No worries or cares anymore
During those briefest moments
Their lives the grim reaper stole.

Living

A kind old lady wiped away a stray tear,
Staring down at her husband beside her.
She never thought it would happen this fast,
But everyone dies sooner or later.

The doctor walked into the waiting room,
An unreadable look in his eyes.
"It's a boy," he informed the assembled group
"But I'm sorry to say his mom died."

When a speeding bullet found its mark,
A young boy lay dead on the ground.
No one knew the reason he died,
His family just gathered around.

The boy looked at his father,
tears in his eyes
"Why does everyone around us
always have to die?"

The father looked sadly at his son
and took a long deep breath
"Think of the things that are worth living for...
Life is not all about death."

Refuse to obey

I watched him from far away
Standing under a lighted corner.
He stood there suspiciously watching me
But I gave him the cold shoulder.

What gives him the right,
To look at me that way?
Is not a man, a man?
I refuse to obey.

His badge shines brightly off the light
That's filtered from above
With narrowed eyes, he views the streets
Despising a job he once loved

What gives someone the special right
To hail above the rest?
This world is too small to live a white lie
In my opinion they're pests

Well I say, cops they're just like us,
People through and through.
When they yield power over us
It's really nothing new.

What gives him the right,
To look at me that way?
Is not a man, a man?
I refuse to obey.

There would be no people left to defend
Without them here or there
This world would be run with guns and drugs
And no one would even care.

Who would defend the weak
Or the wronged?
The people who are mugged, raped or killed
By the strong?

I think it gives him the right,
To look at me that way
They are there to fight for us
Perhaps we should obey.

Learning

With a cry, the bird fell down
Landing on the ground below
Its mother gently nudged it,
But it didn't want to go

Fear makes us afraid
Of things we don't do well
But if we always give up
Then we'll always fail

You have to learn to crawl
Before you learn to walk
Only when you've heard the words
Can you finally learn to talk

So if ever you fall down
Get up and try again
Fixing your mistakes
Is the only way you win

Take it one day at a time
There is no need to rush
Nothing's ever out of reach
If you believe in it strongly enough
